SRQ ARES Mission Statement

SRQ ARES (Sarasota County ARES), is a volunteer organization of skilled Amateur Radio operators, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and a field service activity of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), who provide non-commercial emergency communication services during emergencies and disasters as a public service to the American Red Cross, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, or as requested by any other agency in Sarasota County Florida, governmental or non governmental.

Qualifications for Membership

All participants shall have a valid Amateur Radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission. All participants must have a serious interest in providing volunteer radio communications support in an emergency. All participants shall have an interest in self-improvement and maintaining standards for excellent community service.

Previously, participation in ARES was open to all interested Amateur Radio operators. The only requirements were a valid FCC license and an interest in serving. There were no requirements for ARES participants to be trained and no skill sets were specified. In contrast, many of the partner agencies that ARES serves have mandated and structured training programs where all participants receive the same training and, when activated, or assigned to serve an agency in the field would be qualified to assume any position to which they were assigned.

Therefore, changes have been made to resolve this issue identified by our partners about the inconsistent training required of ARES participants. Under this policy, a national standard for qualification in ARES is instituted to address the needs of our partners. Training will be required for all ARES participants. Such training will be measurable and recognized across a broad spectrum of the country by served partners.

NIMS / ICS Compliance

SRQARES formally adopts the Incident Command System (ICS) as its primary operating guideline for operations, planning, administration and logistics across all phases of emergency management.

SRQARES maintains communications links for use between local Incident Command Posts, and regional/federal EOCs via planned amateur radio frequencies. These operations, when formally activated, are conducted in accordance with the Unified Command concept to Mobilize, Track/Report and De-Mobilize in a flexible and adaptable manner commensurate with the scope of all emergencies.

SRQARES will utilize ICS concepts in all exercises that it initiates and for all public service events it participates in.

Team Meetings

The SRQARES team meets on the first Saturday of each month at 10 am at the American Red Cross building on Cantu Ct. in Sarasota. The purpose of these meetings is to conduct required training of ARES members in the many skills needed to be effective emergency communicators.
